Dwarf tomatoes from plug plants

Our 'All Year Round' dwarf tomatoes stay compact enough for a sunny windowsill or conservatory.

Step by step

  1. Start small. Your plant arrives as a small plug. Pot it into a 6–7cm pot first, not straight into a big container. See potting up plug plants.
  2. Good compost. Sieve out lumps bigger than 10mm and mix in a little sand, perlite or vermiculite so the roots never sit in wet compost.
  3. Water carefully. Water once after potting, then let the compost dry out before watering again. This encourages strong roots.
  4. Move up. After 3–4 weeks, when roots fill the pot, move it to a 1 litre pot on a sunny windowsill or in a conservatory.
  5. Feed. Use a liquid tomato feed once a week. Once fruits start to form, feed at half strength every time you water.
  6. Support. When fruit forms, the plant may get top-heavy. Push a couple of small canes into the pot either side of the plant.
Tip

Keep watering even and regular once the plant is fruiting. Big swings between dry and soaked can make fruit split.
